Ranch Poem – “Soothing Suffering”

5/16/2012

“Soothing Suffering”

Sit down in this familiar, boundless tub
and soak and scrub
in a bath of mindfulness.
Undo these knots of despair
but don’t ignore your pains
as if they weren’t there.
Open circulation to the mind,
release this tension that binds
these poisons to our lives.
You don’t have to worry
about the tap getting cold.
Transformation is happening.
Loosen sorrow’s hold,
something will change.
Look no further for treatment
greet your internal relief
generating careful energies
as you breathe.
Our massage of understanding,
Soothing suffering.

Ranch Poem – “set you high, or bring you down”

6/14/06

“set you high, or bring you down”

sometimes I sit around and wear out my eyes
figuratively exposing this blinding life
for what it will and what it should lead to.
b-sides of this awesome group of bards
reaching out with angst, reaching out far

but this strange feeling in my core
will be tapped forevermore, when I concentrate
and reclaim my grasp from a later date
this people will become sensitive to sensitivity
and the irony will play out, to you, you, and me

if only a trip was safe
if only brain loss and traffic didn’t exist
then so many lives would never erase
themselves and leave us with the rest of this

so, my lovers and friends alike
teach yourself over again, and decide what’s the right
place to settle down, and doctrine to follow around.
hear wisdom from an old man’s voice
but understand that it holds all his life’s choice
and can set you high, or bring you down

Ranch Poem- “The Soloist”

3/10/12

The Soloist

Teary-eyed on jail pay phone
trying to be strong
to be positive
in the distorted face of
incarceration
A year of searching
the existential cracks of
one’s saddened heart
for belief in a life
that exists in memory
and in hopeful plans
Pains untreated
Smiles depleted
Family, friends, love
Despite the suffering
these are noble desires
that tear asunder
the soloist
standing alone among strangers
swirling lost and chained
tearing layers from lips
with sore teeth
wondering to no avail
about “them”
and what they really think
about me
Are they already afraid?
How will they know me?
Am I changed?
Taken down a peg
Joining the disadvantaged
Waving goodbye to old habits,
evil deeds, and invincibility
But what about what made me happy?
Will I have to wait much longer
to know them once again?
Wireless outernet disconnection
Dubstep in commercials taunting
convict conversation reruns
This isn’t quite me sometimes
with the constricted choices
trying to pick the middle way
fighting unsatisfactoryness
Jail sangha somehow tough
Is this the base camp for the summit?
Springing forward tenderly
December’s twenty-first
Who, what, when, where, why, how
will I be?

Ranch Poem – “This way, That way”

2/10/07

This way, That way

I see the way when I close my eyes.
That red, blue, and green starry sky.
A search for life’s bounty and the headwaters of grace.

I see the way when I think of death.
The billowing the covering of it.
As it pours from Fate’s flame.

I see the way when we ride.
In and out, near and far, the right lane.
The right path on another fossil fuel journey.

I see the way when your eyes tear up.
The wetness from all the mess they left us.
And in the involuntary way your face contracts.

I see the way right here playing loud.
The same way generations were defined.
The way vibrations can impact the soul.

I see the way but never expected to see it.
The direction that changed. The change of change.
And now that I know, I always will.

I see the way in a crowded club, the nexus between.
How she swings that backside side to side.
And how a suit and an addict can dance the same dance.

I see the way outside just yesterday.
The constant movement. The rush.
I see it then, next week, tomorrow and today.

I see it this way.
Some people are so ashamed.
Others are so damn mad.
Some people are sane.
Others just got it bad.
Some people cry and weep.
Others play it safe.
Some people take a leap.
Others live as fakes.
Some people play music.
Others shoot craps.
Some people are here.
Others never were.
Some people fear.
Others got the nerve.
I see it that way.

Ranch Poem – “Féinics”

3/2/16

Féinics

She is a Woman.
She is going to make a difference.
She will meet every goal and always create new ones.
She put in the hard work early, did her research,
and won’t be held back by immature thinking or insecurity.
She is grabbing hold of the new opportunity for women,
while representing in a way that will encourage further progress towards equality.
She is capable of anything when she is determined.
She won’t let social norms or pop culture or anyone tell her how she is supposed to think or feel.
She is a responsible healer exploring the cures and techniques from any hemisphere.
She will act with love towards everyone no matter what.
She knows she could not have found wisdom without the mistakes along the way.
She will live where the weather suits her and will travel to share space with the ones she loves.
She will not be a possession but won’t isolate herself.
She will bring people together and be a leader
who will guide them and lift them up with unbridled compassion.
She will always understand and cultivate her mind and body.
She will love the world unconditionally.
She will love other people unconditionally.
She will love herself unconditionally.
She will rise from every fire anew.
Like the féinics, she will rise.

Ranch Poem – “Love Got Lasik”

Artwork by Randal Roberts

1/18/16

Love Got Lasik

It was blind for so long
but my love got lasik

I put those blinders on
to keep some old way intact
Beast of habit be gone
please don’t fucking look back

I lost a friend, much more than
I searched by her soul’s light
My fear fell away in the wind
but that ache grew greater at night

It was blind for so long
but my love got lasik

Didn’t see the luck and fortune of you
I was a gambler playing with time
Too content with some stubborn truths
A clairvoyant ignoring the signs

Darlin’ this was no easy procedure
Peeling back the hardened past
to reveal one thing that could be sure:
I’d change anything to make it last

We didn’t belong in the dark
I see your light and I’m ready to face it
I was blind for so long
but my love got lasik

Ranch Poem – “Poem for Brittany During the Fall”

10/23/2014

“Poem for Brittany During The Fall”

Sitting here rubbing my forehead hard.
You’ll text back eventually.
There’s Time, the great asshole,
hovering in the mind’s dim hallway.
He makes too many feelings for me,
and I only want to be trusted
by friends and lovers and strangers.
These kind eyes carry trouble I guess.

I know you’re going to do your best
to keep us a good idea, keep us okay.
The externals factor too hard sometimes
making rocket science out of our love.
When you talk about me to them,
they talk about me to them,
everyone speculates softly
and I just want to exist alone, away.
The knot of us is already doubled anyway.

Can’t we go wordless and stay in this room
my hand in your hair, my heart quiet?
Talking is my defense mechanism.
I’m on an endless tour of duty.
The shells rain on my shell, some go through me.
Cup my mouth, pat my chest
give me a hand to subtract my duress.
Give up demons, I won’t contest
these signs that are delivered as miracles.

Ranch Poem – Hundred Beaches

10/28/15

Hundred Beaches

Bonny Doon, Cabrillo Highway 1
I don’t know which way I’m going
Got girls behind me and my boys in between
Overcast, but I’m still squinting tight

Hundred beaches, I’m driving up to Oakland
Pampas grass sway, hanging moss hang
Exhaustless cars, I’m exhausted so far
Radio silence and a confusion swelling

Independence is the keys to the car
All the two-lanes merge into one
Yellow light ended quick and now it’s red
Let me into your heart, even if I can’t stay

This native Summer is crashing hard
Keeping tidy my plans to make out good
Got fears behind me and my dreams in view
But the fog never leaves the sun for good
